The dynamism and strong growth characterizing the food industry in Languedoc-Roussillon make it the first industrial sector of the Region with 1174 companies and over 25,000 employees. From the economical aspect, the food industry in the region makes sales of 8 billion Euros (about 12 billion dollars) of which 13% is completed out of France. In terms of quality, the food industry in Languedoc-Roussillon owns its reputation to the great variety of locally-grown traditional products (terroir) reaching an harmonious balance within its extraordinary diversity. The Region associates the benefits of the Mediterranean diet with the authenticity of local products and specialties: fruits & vegetables, seafood (45,000 tons of fish), cereals (20% of French wheat production), cheeses, processed meat (charcuterie), breeding products, honey¡­ Furthermore, its geographical position is ideal for French, Mediterranean and European markets and is enhanced by a strong logistical infrastructure (daily access to more than a 100 million consumers, cost-effective approach of the markets, logistics hubs, commitment to the cold chain, control of traceability, etc) including Saint-Charles International (in Perpignan), the 1st European allotment center for fruits and vegetables.
